Useful Public Speaking Tips

Everyone can use some public speaking tips to make their speeches and presentations better. Sometimes we just seem to go blank when it comes to public speaking. We get lost and don't know how to find our way back. This is why here at public-speaking-guide.com, we have gathered some public speaking tips to help you. Let's just go over a few of these tips for now.

One area of useful public speaking tips is on body language and gestures. Many people seem to be self-conscious about their hand gestures when they are speaking. The best advice is to just be yourself. Relax and do what you would normally do when having a conversation with a friend. Most likely, your natural gestures are enough and you're just being overly cautious. Don't focus on your gestures and lose track of your content. Always remember that your words are more important than your gestures.

Another important topic of public speaking tips is on handling the audience. If you have trouble getting their attention after a break or activity, use silence. Stand before them and don't say anything. As soon as a few people notice, silence will quickly spread through the audience. If you are having a hard time keeping their attention, consider moving around the room. The fact that they have to follow you with their eyes, or even turn in their seat, will keep them focused on what you are saying.

Sometimes you have people in the audience who like to abruptly raise questions and interrupt your speech or presentation. There are a few ways to combat this. First, before you begin to speak, you can ask the audience to raise their hands if they have a question or hold all questions until the end. Keep in mind that it's okay to admit that you don't know the answer to their question, but tell them that you'll find out. Report back after a break and give them the answer. If the questioner is being disruptive, you can just ask them to come to you later during a break. Have a course of action planned for these situations and don't be caught off guard.

There are also useful public speaking tips for when you make a mistake. First, don't focus on it or immediately apologize and fall apart. If you notice the mistake, say something like "excuse me, I meant" and say the correct thing. If you don't notice the mistake until later, you need to quickly decide if it's really important. Your audience will probably not know or correct you, but if it matters for some reason, find an easy place to work it in and correct it in an understated way. Keep in mind that mistakes make you seem human to your audience and so they can act as a positive thing when delivering a speech.
